Local first responders were recently invited to grab a bite at The Ark where the charity championing persons with disabilities hosted a free barbecue for police officers, firefighters and paramedics as gesture of gratitude for keeping communities safe.

The Ark’s production coordinator, Jon Wolstenholme, said the idea was sparked by Shawn Blenus, a worker at The Ark, who wanted to do something special for local crews following a challenging summer marked by demanding emergency responses and major local fires.

"We just wanted to celebrate, let them know that The Ark appreciates them," Wolstenholme said. “Shawn came to us and said, 'Can we throw a barbecue for people?' and that's where we're at."

The menu for the afternoon of Oct. 2 was hot dogs, juice and fresh salad and juice. Const. Charles Bruce, Bridgewater Police Service’s traffic safety officer, was among those who stopped by for lunch.

Wolstenholme noted emergency crews frequently support The Ark by visiting and assisting the organization, making the community gathering a meaningful way to give back and foster strong local connections.

"We really appreciate that,” he said, “it’s all part of the community. Their lives are on the line and we want them to know people still appreciate what they do."
