NEWS RELEASE

SIRT clears Bridgewater officer in crash investigation

Monday, Oct. 5, 2026

Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) cleared an off-duty Bridgewater Police Service officer of any criminal involvement linked to an Upper Tantallon crash.

SIRT, independent police oversight agency, concluded no reasonable grounds existed to believe a criminal offence occurred.

Evidence, including civilian dashcam footage, confirmed the pedestrian unexpectedly stepped onto Highway 103 into the path of the officer's personal vehicle.

RCMP immediately referred the case to SIRT because an off-duty officer was involved in the March 26, 2026 collision.

“This was a tragic incident that greatly affected an off-duty member of our police service,” said Danny MacPhee, deputy chief, Bridgewater Police Service. “Our officers experience tragedy like everyone else. We have supported them throughout this process. The independent review and subsequent findings will provide a level of closure.“

Our thoughts are with the deceased man's family and everyone affected by this loss, MacPhee said.

“We recognize the public's need for absolute trust and accountability, which is why an independent, external investigation by SIRT was immediately triggered to ensure a thorough and unbiased review of the facts,” he noted.

Any questions concerning the police/SIRT investigation should be referred to RCMP or SIRT.
