BPS Keiji 1

We introduced the community to Bridgewater Police Service’s next K-9 police dog, Keiji (pronounced KAY-JEE) in the fall of 2024.

After completing his comprehensive four-month Patrol Dog Handler course with Constable Morgan Gibson, Keiji officially started his patrol duties in late December of 2024.

“It’s a certification that’s renewed annually,” explained Cst. Gibson. “His initial course included tracking, suspect apprehension,
obedience control work, large and small-article searches, as well as searching compounds and buildings. It’s a very comprehensive process.”

K-9 Keiji succeeds the retiring K-9 Davis, who served the community for more than eight years.

“We’ve had Keiji involved in a few search operations already and he’s been excellent,” Cst. Gibson added.

Apart from assisting police investigations, it’s going to be an exciting time for the Bridgewater Police Service K-9 Unit in 2025.

This September, the Canadian Police Canine Association annual trials will be held in Halifax, and the group that K-9 Keiji and Cst. Gibson train with will be hosting the competition.

It’s expected that there will be dozens of K-9 dogs from across Canada coming to participate.

“We don’t usually get to participate – it doesn’t come east very often,” Cst. Gibson said.

“So, we’re really looking forward to the opportunity. We should have lots of photos and stories to share with the community stemming from that event and we’re very much looking forward to representing Bridgewater.”
