Back to school: Bridgewater Police Service urges public to stay alert, slow down

Bridgewater Police Service officers are urging the public to take extra care as Park View Education Centre, Bridgewater Junior High School and Bridgewater Elementary students return to classrooms Thursday, Sept. 3.
“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable first day of school,” said Const. Frank Girhiny, Bridgewater Police Service’s school safety resource officer. “This a special time and, for many, it marks an important milestone. There will be lots of excitement and we encourage people, whether behind the wheel or not, to stay vigilant.”
Back-to-school week means more foot traffic, school buses, bicycles and e-scooters.
The Bridgewater Police Service reminds motorists to slow down and be extra cautious in school zones.
Officers will be patrolling to ensure compliance with road and pedestrian traffic rules.
“Please remember to slow down, watch for children, pay extra attention and be ready to stop,” said Bridgewater Police Service’s traffic safety officer Const. Charles Bruce.
“It is important for cyclists and drivers to stop when approaching a school bus with flashing red lights. It is against the law to pass a bus when those lights are flashing.”
Speed limits in school zones are in full force and effect when children are present. “This is any time children are present, not just when school is in session,” Bruce said.
Also, motorists are legally required to stop for pedestrians attempting to cross at marked crosswalks.
“Pedestrians must also take active steps to ensure their own safety by waiting for the designated ‘walk’ signal where available and only entering a crosswalk once safe to do so,” Bruce pointed out, adding: “We wish everyone a happy and safe return to school.”
Fall term classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 9 at Nova Scotia Community College – Lunenburg Campus in Bridgewater.
