Media Release

April 26, 2021

Late last week, Bridgewater Police Service (BPS) was made aware of a planned rally on Saturday, April 24, in the area of Old Bridge Street and King Street. Organizers assured police that social distancing regulations would be followed. They were advised that BPS was aware of the rally and would be monitoring. There were no traffic permits obtained from the Town of Bridgewater for this event, nor was venue space at Shipyards Landing booked with the Town. Our service did not support or offer encouragement for the rally.

On Saturday, while monitoring the rally, our officers did not observe any breaches of the Health Protection Act (HPA) Regulations that were current at that time. There was also no means of enforcement available to ticket persons traveling from Halifax Regional Municipality area under the HPA on that date.

After BPS officers left the area to continue a separate criminal investigation, we subsequently learned from images on social media that social distancing regulations were breached. Those breaches are actively being followed up by investigators.

We understand the community’s frustration and will continue the investigation as required. As members of our community, we also understand the importance of following the recommendations of Public Health and strongly encourage all Nova Scotians to do so.
