Older Person Safe Driving Program coming to Bridgewater

Bridgewater, NS – When is it time for a senior to give up his driver's license?  What are the new laws of the road?  Are there tricks to driving newer cars?  How does aging affect my driving skills?

Instructors from the Nova Scotia Government Retired Employees Association will answer these and many other questions at the upcoming Older Person Safe Driving Program for drivers age 65 and older, to be held April 27 & 28, 2010 at the Bridgewater Fire Hall, from 9 to noon each day.

This six hour, classroom-based course is designed to refresh driving skills and put in focus many of the distractions facing senior drivers today.

Participants discuss the factors associated with older driver accidents, the limitations ageing places on driving, and how to adjust to changes in health and mobility.  They’ll also learn practical things like how to adjust their mirrors to avoid blind spots, new techniques for holding the steering wheel, the effects of airbags, and how to brake with an anti-lock braking system.

The program is sponsored by the Nova Scotia Government and is free to seniors who hold a valid Nova Scotia drivers licence and are 65 years of age or older.  Those drivers under 65 who would like to register for the program must pay a $40 fee.  Participation has no effect on a senior’s driving record.

The opportunity to participate is in your hands, the same hands that hold the steering wheel of your vehicle.  Seniors interested in registering for the Older Person Safe Driving Program can contact Beth George, Seniors Safety Coordinator at (902) 543-3567.

UPDATE:  Police vehicle involved in Motor Vehicle Collision while responding to Apartment Building Fire September 15,
2009.
On the 15th of September 2009, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Bridgewater Police were called to an apartment complex on North Street as there was a fire in progress. Responding officers determined there was a significant fire in progress and they required assistance in evacuating the building's occupants.

Responding to this call for assistance, Deputy Chief Collyer and another police officer responded in two unmarked police vehicles with their emergency equipment activated (lights and siren).

On Aberdeen Road, both officers encountered traffic as they went up the hill towards the North Street intersection. Deputy Chief Collyer was in the lead vehicle and led both vehicles around traffic in an attempt to reach the fire scene in a timely fashion. Near the top of the hill, just west of the intersection, Deputy Chief Collyer met an on-coming vehicle. Both vehicles braked and a collision occurred. No air bags deployed as a result of the collision, which resulted in only minor damage to both vehicles.

Deputy Chief Collyer, in an effort to clear the road for the emergency vehicle behind him, pulled off the street into the parking lot of a nearby business. The other vehicle's operator did the same thing, however, neither driver was then visible to the other. Deputy Chief Collyer noted the officer of the second Police vehicle had entered the intersection and was out of his vehicle directing traffic. ln view of the fact the operator of the police vehicle involved was the Deputy Chief, this investigation was taken over by Chief Crowhurst.

A review of the evidence was conducted and as a result of a legal consultation, no charges are being laid. There was no evidence of any attempt to evade responsibility and the Town of Bridgewater will be paying  for the damages to the other vehicle involved. The damages to the police vehicle were so minimal, no repairs were required. There were no injuries resulting from this collision.

The Bridgewater Police Service have received a large number of calls in relation to petty thefts from parked vehicles over the last 30 days. While police continue to investigate these thefts, we are asking for the public's assistance to prevent such activity from taking place.

These thefts are all crimes of opportunity. If the vehicle had not been left open and valuables/change were not left in the vehicle, the crime would not have taken place.

By removing all valuables, including small change from your vehicles, the public can take away temptation.

By locking car doors and ensuring windows are rolled up, citizens make it harder for a thief.

By taking these simple precautions, much of these types of theft can be prevented in the future.

Improving safety for seniors

New program by Bridgewater Police will focus on older population
by Lisa Brown

Chief Brent Crowhurst of the Bridgewater Police Service chats with Minister of Seniors Carolyn Bolivar-Getson and David Walker of the Bridgewater Board of Police Commissioners following the funding announcement December 19.

BRIDGEWATER - The Bridgewater Police Service wants to do more to assist seniors.

The department recently received a $20,000 grant from the province to start a seniors' safety program. A co-ordinator will be hired to consult seniors about their needs, examine existing resources and implement additional programs.

"With the recent announcements of all the seniors' housing complexes, it became obvious that we are going to have in excess of 500 more senior citizens living in the Town of Bridgewater in the next short while," Chief Brent Crowhurst says.

The town already has a significant senior population, which is growing with changing demographics. Many seniors don't always feel secure.

"There is a perception in most communities that crime is on the increase, which ironically is not accurate at all. It's quite the opposite. But as I've said many times before, perception becomes the reality," Chief Crowhurst says.

"For me, whether or not a senior is comfortable walking on the streets of Bridgewater has more to do with what's going on throughout the province, throughout North America," he adds. "It's understandable if you're being bombarded with stories of violence in the news media, you sometimes will internalize that and begin to worry about your own safety."

Crime statistics in Bridgewater would suggest it is a very safe community for seniors. Part of the seniors' safety co-ordinator's job will be to pass that message along and improve the perception through a combination of workshops, individual visits and information.

"One of the things I look forward to the new seniors' safety co-ordinator being able to do is to do an inventory of all the agencies and helping groups that are currently available in Bridgewater and, wherever appropriate, for the police service to fill any gaps," the chief says.

However, he admits he doesn't have all the answers. That's why the co-ordinator will spend the first months on the job seeking input from seniors and agencies that exist to support them. From there, programs will be developed and implemented.

The co-ordinator will also work with the business community to encourage more businesses to be "senior friendly." That can be as simple as altering store layout and providing rest areas.

Within a year, the chief hopes to see the town designated as a seniors' friendly community.

Minister of Seniors Carolyn Bolivar-Getson announced the sustained funding December 19 on behalf of her department and the Department of Justice. It's one of four new programs throughout the province receiving similar cash. Nine others are already operating.

"The police will now have the opportunity to better educate seniors about safety, provide resources and assistance so seniors can remain in their homes, and work with other partners to further ensure safety and security to our seniors," Ms Bolivar-Getson said.

The Bridgewater Police Commission will provide additional funding which is not covered by the provincial grant, including employee benefits and a vehicle.

[June.14.08]  Karrisa Boudreau case

On January 27, 2008,at 7:30 pm, Karissa Boudreau's mother, Penny Boudreau, reported her daughter missing  in the Town of Bridgewater.  Police began an extensive search for Karissa which lasted for several days. On Saturday February 9th, 2008, a passer-by noticed a body on an embankment near the LaHave River on the outskirts of Bridgewater. Everyone's worst fears were confirmed when the body was identified to be that of Karissa. Further investigation confirmed that this was a homicide. The Bridgewater Police and the RCMP  embarked on an extensive 5 month joint investigation to find the person or persons responsible. 34 year old Penny Patricia Boudreau was arrested on Friday June 13th in Halifax. She will answer to the charge of First Degree Murder on Monday June 16th at Bridgewater Provincial Court.

Investigators want the family to know that the focus has always been on Karissa and ensuring that the person responsible for her homicide would be brought to justice. They understand how difficult these months have been for them knowing that the person responsible was still free. Investigators maintained close contact with the family, providing them with what information they could. Investigators would like to thank the family for their understanding during the time when details could not be shared.

Investigators would also like to thank the public for their assistance and support during this investigation. Hundreds of tips came in; all were followed up and a number of them provided valuable information.

From the onset, Investigators were confident this was an isolated incident. With extensive experience in serious crimes and homicides, Major Crime Investigators felt that Karissa must have known her killer. This was reinforced by the RCMP profiler who assisted investigators, but this did not stop investigators from exploring all possible avenues.

An integrated approach was taken during this investigation. Karissa was first reported missing in the Town of Bridgewater, but the search ended just outside the town where her body was found. Bridgewater Police worked closely with the RCMP Major Crime Unit throughout this investigation and offered the advantage of knowing the community. The RCMP provided considerable resources to this investigation without which this would have become a much longer investigation. The specialized expertise they provided would have been difficult to obtain otherwise.

For police, the trust of the public and media is an important part of the investigative process. While investigators tried to provide as much information as possible, the public can appreciate the need to limit what is divulged so as not to compromise the integrity of the investigation. Police have to weigh the public's right to know versus the integrity of that investigation.

Investigator's feel confident that there was only one person responsible for this homicide. No other person's are expected to be charged in this case.

Penny Boudreau will be reappearing in Bridgewater court at 2 pm on June 24th, 2008.
